Introduction: Many factors have been investigated to determine their effect on the rate of closure of the tympanic membrane and hearing improvement. Several studies have been conducted on tympanoplasty, which show that the success rate and success criteria vary between authors, and this result depends on several factors, including the size of the perforation, presence of myrigosclerosis, the state of the mucosa, the type of surgical technique, the type of graft, among others.
Objective: To analyze factors associated with failure in tympanoplasty type 1 in patients with chronic non-cholesteatomatous otitis media
Material and methods: An observational, analytical, cross-sectional and retrospective study was conducted. Clinical, demographic and surgical variables were collected. Descriptive statistics were applied with measures of central tendency and dispersion, relative frequencies and absolute frequencies, for the inferential analysis and search for association between variables and failure of type 1 tympanoplasty, Pearson's Chi-square test was used. A p value ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. The statistical program SPSS version 27 in Spanish was used for the analysis and the Excel statistical package for the preparation of tables and graphs. Results: 64 records were included, age 43.86 SD ± 16.72, female predominance 46 (72%) with a success rate of 72%, hypertension and diabetes were the most common comorbidities, the Overley technique was used in 51 (80%), the use of a microscope in 56 (88%) and retroauricular 43 (67.20%), comorbidities 32 (50%), fascia was used in 51 (81.30%), no association was found with failure and visualization (0.609), presence of comorbidities (p = 0.7069), type of graft tissue (p = 0.603), approach (p = 0.429), perforation size (p = 0.7510), smoking (p = 0.3325), otorrhea (0.179), myrigosclerosis (p=0.891), trans-canal or retroauricular approach (p=0.429) and graft placement technique (p=0.843).
Conclusions: Our results show a success rate of 72%, no associations were found between success and the variables evaluated.
