Objective: To determine the presence of changes in pre- and postoperative electroencephalographic findings
in children aged 0 to 17 years who underwent heart surgery at a
referral center in Colombia between August and November 2017. Materials and methods: An electroencephalogram was recorded one hour prior to cardiac surgery and again seven days after the procedure;
clinical data associated with the presence of abnormalities on the electroencephalogram were collected. The
data were subjected to descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analysis. Results:
Changes were found in the electroencephalographic tracings from the preoperative to the postoperative
period in two ways: one involving a deterioration of tracings from normal to abnormal, and the other involving a worsening of the abnormal tracing. Conclusions: Patients
undergoing surgery present altered electroencephalographic tracings. The population undergoing cardiac surgery at the study center is highly diverse, leading to
varied neurological outcomes and influencing changes in postoperative tracings.
