Introduction: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases, there are multiple studies on the prevalence in the general population, ranging between 1,5 to 57 cases per 1,000 inhabitants. The risk factors associated with this pathology, have not been determined conclusively. Materials and Methods: By means of a convenience sample made to the assistants of neurological controls in the Liga Caldense contra la Epilepsia
(League of Caldas against epilepsy) and the attendants of neuro-paediatric consults in the Hospital Infantil de la Cruz Roja Colombiana - Seccional Caldas (Children hospital of the Colombian Red Cross – Caldas Section). A descriptive-corelational study was made parting from surveys and revision of clinical histories. Results: 73.3% of patients were aged between 0 and 20 years, the predominant gender was masculine (61.3%).
83.8% was of a low social-economical stratum (I-II). 69.6% was product of a first or second pregnancy. 38.2% had an abnormal psychomotor development and 39.7% had an inappropriate language development. In 58% the start of the crisis was developed in younger than 10 years, the most common type of crisis was the generalized tonic-clonic with 65.3%. Conclusion: The risk factors in epilepsy remain unknown as a whole, despite
many made studies, so it is essential to develop strategies on basis of these findings, allowing significantly reduce the bio-psycho-social impact of this disease.
