Colonoscopy for abdominal pain study: It is worth it?

Objective: Abdominal pain is a frequent reason for consultation in the outpatient and hospitalized patient. Colonoscopy is accepted as the gold standard in the study of colonic pathologies such as hematochezia and anemia among others. According to the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), the rate of non-indicated colonoscopies is 24.5% for outpatients and 15.5% for hospitalized patients. The aim of this study was to characterize the findings and indication for colonoscopy in the study of abdominal pain in a III level hospital in the period from November 2020 to February 2021.
Materials and methods: A retrospective study of patients undergoing colonoscopy for abdominal pain was performed by reviewing colonoscopy reports and electronic medical records.
Results: A total of 209 colonoscopies were performed, of which 60 patients presented with abdominal pain as the reason for requesting the procedure. A total of 76.7% of the patients were referred from outpatient services of other health care institutions. A normal result was found in 36.7%, 25% hemorrhoids, 21.6% diverticulosis without diverticulitis and 3.3% malignant tumors. The polyp detection rate in this study was 10%.
Conclusion: One third of the patients with abdominal pain did not have a clear indication for the study.
