Describe the prevalence, associated factors, and effects of breastfeeding
on anthropometric variables and pathologies of infants born in ASSBASALUD
ESE Manizales (Colombia). Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was
conducted. Study population consisted of 1261 children who were born in ASSBASALUD
E.S.E. San Cayetano clinic between 2010 and 2011. Results: 30,9%
of the mothers gave exclusive breastfeeding, 64.9% of them had an early weaning,
99.8% of mother started breastfeeding, the average length of breastfeeding was
3.81 months, 99.6% of mothers received education on breastfeeding, controls on the
growth and development program during the first 6 months of life. It was observed
that children with exclusive breastfeeding had a higher weight gain (plus 8.9% at
1° control) and body height gain (plus 3% at 1° control) than those who did not
received it. No significant relationship was found between exclusive breastfeeding
and protection against respiratory infections, diarrhea, allergies or malnutrition.
Conclusions: Exclusive breastfeeding favors an adequate weight gain and body
height on those infants which are given exclusive breastfeeding properly. Poor
adherence to the exclusive breastfeeding can be related to an inadequate form of
education or failure in permanent control and support to the mothers complementary
to the information.
