Objectives: Find the epidemiological factors of the teenagers in the Children’s University Hospital “Rafael Henao Toro” in the city of Manizales (Caldas, Colombia) admitted mfor suicide intent between the years 2000 and 2008. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study (retrospective). Medical records of the patients in the age between 10 and 18 years where analyzed. Information was collected about the demographic, cultural and educational situation and their access to an adequate Health Service. The behavior was analyzed according to genre, age
and mechanism of injury. Results: It was observed a more frequent intent in females (79%), the highest number during the year 2000 (16.7%). The average age of patients with suicide intent was of 14.5 years, with the highest frequency at the age of 15(21.4%). The most utilized method was the use of organophosphates (43%), followed by drugs (21.5%) and
antidepressants (13.7%). As for the precipitating event family problems are the most frequent (50.4%), followed by emotional problems (18.1%). 18.3% of the patients required
intensive care, and 1.25% of the total were followed by death. Other associated risk factors were previous suicide attempts, history of depression, family and school problems.
Conclusions: A diminution was appreciated in the frequency of suicide attempts in Manizales, though this was not adequately explained. Most of the obtained results match previous results on the subject.
