Clinics Health Centers of ASSBASALUD ESE in the city of Manizales. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study which included 171 patients selected through a convenient survey of those patients belonging to high blood pressure
groups of the ASSBASALUD ESE Clinics and Centers in the city of Manizales. The application of alternative treatments were investigated as an annexed treatment for the management of their pathology and of these, which one was dominant, and
also the presence or absence of a damaged target organ. Demographic parameters were included such as: sex, age, social and economic status, employment, civil status, education, insurance coverage, high blood pressure level, and target organ damage. Results: Of a survey of 171 patients, the mean age was 63.45 years, female was dominant in regards to sex (76.6%), the grand majority were in the level 1 high blood
pressure group (58.2%), the majority apply alternative therapies (71.3%), the most commonly applied therapy was Fito-Fruit therapy (23.1%), the majority of them were self-medicated (51.6%) and recommended by family members (22.2%).
Conclusions: In the present study, the grand majority of the patients relied on the use of alternative treatments; the Fito-Fruit therapy was shown the most frequently used therapy. Significant differences were determined in the use of these, the social and economic conditions (three) and the employment (housewives). A greater use of alternative treatments was observed in women. The majority were self-medicated.
There was no evidence found to support the efficiency of these therapies.
