Preterm deliveries include births before a gestational age of 37 weeks. It’s from unknown
etiology and seems to be a multi-factorial pathology, which worldwide is recognized as
the first cause of prenatal morbidity and mortality.
Objective: To identify risk factors for preterm deliveries in the pregnant women of the
departments of Caldas between the years 2003 and 2006.
Materials and Methods: A descriptive retrospective study was made of cases and
controls in local hospitals of the Republica Hospitalaria de Caldas (Caldas Hospital
Republic) (Manizales, Caldas, Colombia). The case selection (Preterm births between
week 24 and 36 with 6 days) and the selection of controls (term births between week
37 and 41 and 6 days).
Results: In the 669 analyzed patients a significant in the following variables was found:
education, preterm labor menace, urinary infections, positive serology, beginning of
the labor and anemia. The number of prenatal control is also an important predictor
respecting this pathology.
Conclusions: The detected risk factors in this study have a relationship with those
analyzed in other studies, which shows significance in those factors. This is why its
early detection and prevention has to be taken into account. In relation with the risk of
preterm births, this study shows the importance of the prenatal controls.
