Introduction. The statistics of morbi-mortality of the department of Caldas (Colombia)
show the infarct of myocardium in the first places, for that reason the interest arises to
investigate the degree of knowledge in the interpretation of the electrocardiographic
pattern in the Medicine students of the University of Manizales.
Materials and Methods. A corelational descriptive study, in which the knowledge of
the electrocardiographic pattern in 99 medicine students of the university of Manizales
was evaluated. A questionnaire was designed to evaluate the knowledge of the
electrocardiographic pattern, these questionnaire consists of multiple selection, and
true-false questions, and interpretation of an electrocardiogram.
Results. It is observed that the semesters ninth and tenth show a qualification average
significantly higher than eighth semester; and a tendency in students with higher
averages to obtain better scores in the questionnaire. The qualification average was
of 1,82. No other significant differences were found. Conclusions. It is recommended
to implement periodic strategies of continued education or updates that guarantee the
suitable retention of the knowledge. The majority of the students included in the study
consider that the education method is inadequate, although they consider the class
of electrocardiography interesting; they recommend improving the methodology. The
main identified problem is the lack of electrocardiographic clinical practice. Case studies
and virtual patients could be the strategies that motivate the student and satisfies the
theoretical-practical approach that is claimed.
