Introduction: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of violent behavior in public and private schools in Manizales, Caldas, Colombia.
Materials and Methods: A sample of 325 students aged between 10 and 20 years, of 4 public and private schools in Manizales (Caldas, Colombia), from 6th to 11th grade, was employed. For collecting data a survey was used with common aspects of school
and adolescence such as socioeconomic status, exposure to domestic violence, the presence of separated families, the use of illegal substances and drugs, institutional data, social and family characteristics and violent behavior in adolescents (ecologic model, Plutchik violent risk questionnaire).
Results: A violent risk according to Plutchik 45.2% was found. The population had an average age of 14.7 years with a higher percentage of grade 8 students (21.2%), social stratum 3 (41.5%). The vast majority of students (90.5%) do not use illegal drugs and the remaining 9.5%, predominantly consume cannabis (5.8%), 82.5% non-smokers, 69.2% of the studied population don’t consume alcohol and those who do, 26.1% consume it 1-2 times a week. A strong correlation between Plutchik violent risk, ecological model variables, and variables like familiar functionality, alcohol and tobacco and the
use of illegal substances was found.
Conclusions: In this study a high Plutchik violent risk was found, in school population
of Manizales city
