Introduction: TB is the primary cause of death in HIV/AIDS patients according to OMS, it is therefore important to determine the prevalence of co-infection HIV/TB in the department of Caldas (Colombia).
Materials and methods: An analytic study of retrospective cohort was made, in which where evaluated all patients with HIV/AIDS (n = 372) and patients with TB (n = 1044) in the department of Caldas (Colombia), between years 2005-2009. The database of
the Caldas Territorial Health direction was analyzed in order to determine co-infected patients.
Results: A total of 96 HIV patients with TB co- infection (25.8%) were found, 80 men (83.3%) and 16 women (16.7%). Average age was of 36.4 years, the cities with higherfrequency of co-infection were Manizales, and Chinchiná with 65 patients, 53.1% and 14.6% respectively, 84% come from urban areas. According to the sexual identity 72.2% were heterosexuals, 19.4% homosexuals, 17.9% were unemployed.
Conclusions: Comparing with previous studies a high prevalence of TB in patients with HIV in the state of Caldas was found, this result being of great utility for the area of the public health from this state, for HIV is one of the pathologies with the most
social impact.
