To evaluate the factors associated with adolescent childbearing in relation to a group of pregnant adult women and the potential characteristics that may affect the mother´s and newborn’s health. Materials and methods: Cross sectional study. We included all women who gave birth at the health center of San Cayetano ASSBASALUD E.S.E (Manizales, Colombia), between 2009 and 2010. Results: 900 clinic histories of pregnant women were analyzed. 99% of the child births where delivered vaginally, 64.2% of the pregnant women younger than 19 year presented
some kind of complication during delivery, being the most frequent complication the necessity of episiotomy (33.3%); the average birth weight was of 3063gr and a 4.3% had a low weight. 49.6% of the pregnant women older than 19 presented some kind of complication, being tear grade II the most frequent; the average birth weight was of 3163gr and a 3.1% presented low weight. There were no major differences between the two
groups regarding maternal mortality, neonatal mortality, fetus malformation, apgar score after 1 minute, after 5 minutes, neonatal size, amount of prenatal controls, etc. Next to
this important differences were found between both groups regarding the consumption of substances, planning of the pregnancy, schooling, use of contraceptives, maternal
weight, age of first sexual relations, number of pregnancies, births between others. Conclusions: Although in this population important differences are found between adolescent ad adults regarding the weight of the newborn and difficulties during delivery, these differences are not sufficient to produce in the morbidity and mortality of newborns from adolescent and adult pregnant women.
