To evaluate nutritional status of children in first grade between 5 and 7 years old, and to compare curves of growth and development of the WHO and Colombia. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study, with a sample of 336 children from 6
educational institutions from Manizales, Colombia. The information was obtained by sending surveys to parents; anthropometrics measures were taken in each institution
and were categorized according to resolution 2121 of 2010 of the Ministry of Social Protection of Colombia. Results: the average age of children was 7±0,54 years. The height/age and BMI/age categorizations calculated according to development curves
to WHO and Colombia were significantly different (p=0,000). According to Colombian curves, 61,2% were had an adequate weight; 22,5% with risk of thinness, and 4% with thinness, 87,7% had an adequate height, 9,8% had risk of low height, and 2,5% had low height. The categorization of size according to Colombian curves resulted related to having been breastfeed (p=0,044), and having medical history in the past 3 months.
The BMI categorization by according to Colombian curves resulted related to mother’s (p=0,004) and father’s (p=0,035) education. Conclusions: Colombian charts differ from WHO charts for both height/age to BMI/age. The population had a high proportion of risk to the thinness and slimness, and a significant proportion of risk of low height and low height, which would suggest the need for intervention.
