Introduction: Today the problem has become evident according to the congestion that is
registered daily in the emergency medical services. Because of this the necessity arose
to make an analysis of the adequate demand of the emergency medical service.
Materials and methods: This study takes into account diverse social demographic
variables and the criteria of the correct or incorrect use of the emergency medical
services which are based on protocols from studies realized in other countries and
adapted to our medium. The investigation was carried out within the emergency medical
center pilot of Assbasalud E.S.E. in Manizales Colombia, from questionnaires directly
realized with patients and from the clinical history.
Results: It was founded that 23.6% of the consults are inadequate and 16.6% of
the stays, both are enough to saturate the service. The consult for acute pathology
predominates (83.2%), predominating those of the respiratory-system (24.1%). The
population of patients in the extremes of life consult more frequently the emergency
service, associated with respiratory and gastrointestinal pathologies. A 32.2% of male
and 67.8% of female patients are found. Most of them found to be of the lowest levels
of SISBEN (level 1 and 2) 72.0% and 21.5% respectively. The female gender predominates
(58.8%) and the lowest levels of education( 58%), 65.6% have no job.
