History of the Journal Archivos de Medicina
The Revista Archivos de Medicina of the University of Manizales was founded in 2001 by the Faculty of Health Sciences with the aim of consolidating an academic space for the dissemination of research, experiences and reflections in the field of medicine and health sciences. Its first issue (Vol. 1, No. 1) was published in February 2001, after two years of institutional and academic preparation.
Origins and early years (1999–2005)
On 24 January 1999, the Faculty of Medicine began its first academic term with 60 students enrolled. From that moment on, the editorial project for the journal as a vehicle for scientific dissemination began to take shape. The first editor was Dr Óscar Castaño Gaviria, founding dean of the Faculty, accompanied by Dr Jorge Raad Aljure and Dr Luis Miguel Ramírez Restrepo as associate and assistant editors, and Dr José Fernando Aristizábal as editor-in-chief.
Volume 1, No. 1 (2001) included informative and scientific texts, among them Risk Factors in the Colombian Population in General [1] and Infectious Diseases in Colombia: A Compendium of 1999 [2]. It also included institutional sections such as the History of the Faculty of Medicine [3]. the Journal's Regulations, and the Medical Education Project.
Three issues were published in 2001 (February, June, and October). Starting in 2002, the journal became a biannual publication, with a greater number of articles and sections dedicated to conferences, symposiums, bibliographic exchanges, and scientific correspondence. In 2005, the journal recorded the first class of general practitioners from the University of Manizales, reflecting its link to institutional academic life.
Consolidation and first recognitions (2006–2012)
In 2006, Dr. Luis Miguel Ramírez Restrepo took over as editor, emphasising experimental research and strengthening editorial rigour. That same year, the Faculty obtained Qualified Registration through Resolution 5376 of 7 September 2006, a fact highlighted in the pages of the journal.
In 2007, Archivos de Medicina entered the Publindex National Bibliographic Index (Colciencias) in Category C, and subsequently reached Category B in successive calls for submissions, with a sustained presence in the system for more than a decade.
Between 2011 and 2012, under the direction of Dr. José Jaime Castaño Castrillón and Dean Patricia Toro Duque, the journal promoted formative research and the publication of descriptive cross-sectional studies prepared by medical students.
Digital transition and internationalisation (2013–2020)
In 2013, the journal adopted its electronic version (ISSN 2339-3874), maintained its print format (ISSN 1657-320X), and consolidated open access. During this period, it achieved Category B in Publindex (2013–2017) and expanded its international visibility with its inclusion in Latindex Catálogo 2.0, RedIB, Dialnet, Redalyc, DOAJ, Google Scholar, and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) of Web of Science.
The publication maintained a stable biannual frequency, evidence of the institutional commitment to research and scientific dissemination.
Continuity (2021–2025)
The latest official Publindex classification was Category C (2021). Currently, the journal continues as an active scientific publication with a presence in international databases. During this period, it reinforced peer review, editorial transparency, and the application of scientific ethics principles defined by COPE, Scopus, and DOAJ, in line with open science guidelines.
Archivos de Medicina maintains its biannual digital publication in Spanish, with abstracts in English and Portuguese. The University of Manizales finances its publication. It publishes original articles, reviews and reflections, as well as short communications, clinical cases and academic reviews, in a free open access format. The scientific and editorial orientation is under the responsibility of Dr Fernando Álvarez López, with the academic and administrative direction of Dr Sandra Patricia González Peña, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Institutional timeline
With more than twenty-five years of history, the Revista Archivos de Medicina is an academic project in constant evolution that combines tradition, scientific rigour and technological adaptation. Its longevity reflects the institutional commitment of the University of Manizales to research, medical education and open scientific communication, consolidating it as a national and international reference publication in the field of health sciences.
