Objective: determine the characteristics of long- term care that receive the institutionalized elderly population and of the beneficiaries of the strategy leaded by elderly care center (AMAUTA) from Secretary of Welfare of the municipality of Medellín (Colombia) in 2012. Materials and methods: It was conducted an observational - descriptive study through interviews and reviews of the records. Were determined: the characteristics of the centers, types of services provided and available staff; and of the seniors were established socio-demographic data, dependency status, health conditions, social activities and the attention time received for each one of the seniors. Results: there are 852 beneficiaries of the program of assistance in the network of 16 protection centers for the seniors of the city, most of them are private institutions that provide welfare services, the team is mainly supported by auxiliary personnel. Conclusions: the centers develop a geriatric care plan defined by the municipality and respond to a habitational and nutritional assistance, defined by health situations and them autonomy grade.
