Objective: to evaluate if the circulating levels of adiponectin an resistin, and the adiponectin/ resistin index, correlate with albuminuria in diabetic patients. Material and Methods: serum levels of adiponectin and resistin were measured by ELISA in 30
type-2 diabetic patients with never-treated hypertension. In all of them 24 hrs urinary albumin excretion, was measured. The adiponectin/resistin index was estimated using the following formula (1+log10 Resistin-log10 adiponectin). The relationship between adipocyokine levels and the adiponectin/resistin index with albuminuria was assessed by the Pearson correlation coefficient test. Results: a correlation between adiponectin
levels and albuminuria was not found (R= -0,09 p > 0,05), nor with resistin al urinary albumin excretion (R= 0,23 p>0,05), However, 24 hrs albuminuria correlated positively with the adiponectin/resistin index (R= 0,312, p<0,01). Conclusion: the results shown a correlation between the adiponectin/resistin index and renal damage in diabetic hypertensive patients. The adiponectin/resistin index may be a marker of diabetic nephropathy, and a therapeutic target.
