Objective: To clinically and sociodemographically characterize burn patients admitted to a fourth-level center in Santiago de Cali between January 2019 and January 2020.
Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional study with a secondary source. The entire population that was registered in the database of burned patients from January 2019 to January 2020 was included. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were taken. In addition, the correlations and comparisons of medians between the variables evaluated are reported.
Results: 279 medical records were reviewed, 173 belonging to male patients (62%). The mean age was 32.7 ± 19.4 years (Range: 1-84). Most of the burns were thermal (79.9%). A significant relationship was found between the qualitative variables sex vs. degree of depth of the burn (p=0.03), sex vs. type of burn (p=0.00), age vs. total body surface area burned (%TBSA) (p=0.00), age vs. status at discharge (p=0.00), %TBSA vs. degree of burn depth (p=0.00), and %TBSA vs. status at discharge (p=0.00).
Conclusions: According to the characterization carried out, a higher percentage of burned men was found compared to women, predominance of thermal burns, a wide age range, and higher mortality in the older adult population. This information contributes to the search for appropriately directing physical, economic and human talent resources to intervene for the management and improvement of health care for the population of Valle del Cauca.
