Introduction: Residents in medical and surgical specialities are at risk of developing burnout syndrome, which negatively affects their health and, consequently, triggers alterations in serum cytokine levels that lead to a state of inflammation.
Objective: To assess work-related stress through the diagnosis of burnout syndrome and levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in first-year residents at the University of Cauca.
Materials and Methods: A prospective, longitudinal, descriptive study that used self-administered questionnaires to assess sociodemographic, clinical and residency variables, the Zung test and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Venous blood samples were taken to measure cytokines using ELISA. This was carried out at baseline, at six months and at one year (three samples).
Results: Fourteen medical residents participated. 100% of the cohort exhibited abnormalities in at least one of the dimensions associated with burnout syndrome, with emotional exhaustion being the most prevalent. Ultimately, 14% of the residents exhibited burnout, and a significant decrease in TNF-α production was observed.
Conclusion: This syndrome is multifactorial and requires chronic and constant stressors that impact the health of residents, indicating an alteration in their inflammatory status.
