To describe and compare the characteristics and the perceived burden
of care of men family caregivers of people with chronic illness in different regions of
Colombia. Materials and methods: This is a descriptive, comparative cross-sectional
study with an intended sample of 303 family caregivers of men with chronic disease
from the different geographic regions of Colombia. The GCPC-UN-C instrument was
used to characterize the family caregivers and the Zarit’s Caregiver Burden Interview
in order to assess the care burden perception. Results: Caregivers from Colombia
belonged in 83% of cases to the Andean region, 7% to the Pacific region, 4% to the
Orinoco region, 4% to the Caribbean region and 2% to the Amazon region. The average
age was 50 years. In its most they were spouses, children or parents. They occupy 7 to
24 hours a day caring for their family members and 40% of them have been doing so
for more than 36 months. In 31.8% of the cases they reported care burden perception.
Conclusions: Demographic and labor market trends give more demands for male care
of their ill family members. Characterization of male family caregivers of people with
chronic disease in Colombia including their perception of the care burden, contributes
to the knowledge of this population as a base to build specific answers to their needs.
