Infective endocarditis (IE) is caused by microorganisms of the endocardial surface of the heart, that posteriorly leads to vegetation formation. It is most commonly caused by gram-positive organisms, such as Staphylococcus and Streptococcus; gramnegative microorganisms cause about 10% of all cases of endocarditis. Less than Archivos 2% of IE is caused by Gram-negative non-HACEK (ie, Hemophilus, Actinobacillus, Cardiobacterium, Eikenella, and Kingella) microorganisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa; the latter affects mostly immunocompromised patients, leading to severe
nosocomial infections, with high rates of morbidity and mortality. It is associated with intravenous drug abusers, catheter related infections and prosthetic valve disease. Common sources are the respiratory tract, urinary tract and blood stream infection.
We describe the case of an immunocompetent 73 year male patient, who had infective endocarditis of an aortic prosthetic valve.
