Goal: This article is a review about human consciousness from the cognitive sciences point of view. We present a theoretical analysis about the relationship between medicine, neurology, psychology and philosophy when studying consciousness. Discussion: We analyze different points of view about the concept of consciousness from phenomenology, well explained by Damasio, where he identifies the self which acknowledges the presence of a subject oriented to action and the autobiographic self, a conscious self, which understands, capable of building a social and spiritual dimension. Conclusions: From the neuropsychological and medical model, we could say that consciousness is a transversal neurocognitive function to every single higher mental process, so that the subject can structure the self, self-concept, and the autobiographic self. However, there is still a great need to keep up with the studies concerning consciousness.
