The HIV disease is today pandemic. Twenty years after the first reports, 3.000.000 people have died. It is calculated that 40.000.000 people are infected, 15.000 new cases a year, 1.7
people are infected per hour. Ninety five percent of the carriers in the world have not yet developed the illness. The description of the syndrome and the identification of its causing agent occurred in the 80´s. A few years later, drugs were available for its treatment. Nonetheless, we still do not have a vaccine or therapy for its cure. The optimization of the available therapeutic
resources is the key today.
The counting fo the CD4 cells and the quantification of the viral load indicates the moment when treatment should be initiated. Its periodic evaluation allows the following to the progress of the illness and/or the results of the treatment.
As in all illnesses, the proactive attitude of the patients and of the high-risk groups is crucial for the prevention and treatment.
