José Fernando Giraldo Cardona

It is about a serious, progressive, and lethal pathology, once it has freely evolved. Coronary problems and arterial hypertension cause more than ¾ of cardiac insufficiency. It was
traditionally considered as a simple hemodynamic problem, and it was treated likewise. It is considered today that besides the hemodynamic problems cardiac insufficiency is a progressive condition in which most of the patients die within the first five years; after symptoms showed up. Physiopathology shows hemodynamic, neurohumoral, inflammatory or hypertrophic
answers in the adaptive and non-adaptive character. This brings a new challenge to the medical doctors in the primary or specialized assistance. In order to understand cardiac insufficiency, as a clinical syndrome, perfect physiopathology knowledge is required; as well as clinical manifestations and the available drug action used in the treatment. Important advances have been achieved in the last decade that have modified the treatment goals.
