Landmines and unexploded ordnance cause an estimated 15 to 20 thousand victims a year according to UN reports. Its use in conventional warfare goes back to the American Civil War and later at 2 World Wars. In irregular conflict he had its heyday in Vietnam in the years
60. In Colombia, its use has been increasing since the late 90's by guerrilla groups collaterally committing large numbers of civilians. According to reports Mines Observatory of the Vice Presidency of the Republic, had caused casualties to June 5152 2006 positioned above countries with a history of use of such devices as Cambodia and Afghanistan. The severity of injuries such unconventional weapons, lies in its immense destructive power and its ability to cause disabling sequelae in victims. Use seeks the highest number of disabled in the enemy as many casualties. Such assumptions, when they are transferred to the civilian population translate into
Injuries to commit the rest of his family, social and productive life. In addition, something that is difficult to handle, produce psychological and psychiatric displaced from their places of residence, work or study population effects. The clinical case shows the experience of a Regional Hospital of Colombia, located in an area of geopolitical influence of groups in conflict, managed by the general surgery and results in handling this tragic form of terrorism. It also raises the end strategies to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with this scourge.
