pollution associated with adverse health effects. Objective: Damage study produced by Mycoplasma fermentans inoculation and inhalation of volcanic ashes. Materials and methods: Ashes were collected from small towns near the Popocatépetl volcano. 10 hamsters were exposed to the volcanic ashes, 10 hamsters were intratracheal injected with Mycoplasma fermentans and then exposed to volcanic ashes, and another group of 10 hamsters were not exposed to ashes and administration of mycoplasmas and were considered as control. After 60 days animals were sacrificed, blood was collected in order to determine hematocrite and white blood differential count, serum was used to determine the presence of antibodies. Histopathological studies were performed with the hamsters lung. Results: Animals exposed to volcanic ashes lost weight and they also showed a decrease in neutrophils count. Antibodies against Mycoplasma fermentans were not detected. The histopathological study of lungs exposed to ashes showed cellular detritus, acute inflammatory reaction and lymphocyte infiltrate. Animals that were previously infected with mycoplasma and then exposed to ashes showed
enlargement of alveolar wall, infiltrate of plasmatic cells, neutrophils and hemorrhagic focus. These data indicate that Mycoplasma fermentans can interact with environmental
stimuli such as inhalation of volcanic ashes, can potentially adverse health effects.
