Introduction: the analysis of free carnitine using dried blood specimen and the procedures
described for the analysis of acylcarnitines gives variable results which correlate
poorly with the results obtained by analysis of the simultaneous plasma samples using
other techniques.
Materials and methods: dried plasma samples in filter paper were analyzed for free
and total carnitine using stable isotope dilution electrospray tandem mass spectrometry,
compared with the traditional radio-enzymatic assay.
Results and discussion: The present work introduce a new effective method, for
quantitation of plasma free and total carnitine, as a good alternative for replacing the
radio enzymatic assay which consumes many time and laboratory materials for each
analyzed sample.
