Objective: To establish the frequency of acute respiratory infections and associated
risk factors in children under 5 years old, in ASSBASALUD, Manizales, Caldas, Colombia.
Materials and methods: A cross sectional study based in the revision of medical
records of patients hospitalized in the ASSBASALUD ESE clinics between January
1st 2004 and December 31st 2006. RESULTS: The most frequent pathology was
Pneumonia: San Cayetano (65.7%), Enea (66,9%); 464 boys and 346 girls respectively.
The male gender had a higher frequency (58,5%). Patients exposed to cigarette
smoke presented more chance of Pneumonia (87,5% against 12,5%) and Bronchiolitis
(100% against 0%).
Conclusions: for the present In this study the exposure to cigarette smoke is the most
important risk factor related to a major proportion of Pneumonia and Bronchiolitis; Age
and hospitalization time are also related. Male gender had a major frequency. The most
frequent diagnosis is Pneumonia (66,3%), followed by Bronchiolitis (11,5%). There is
a significant lack of data useful in the medical records, about other risk factors
