Objective: To describe the histopathological findings of the Pap smear and colposcopy in women attending the clinic ASSBASALUD ESE and the LEAGUE AGAINST CANCER and the relationship with risk factors for cervical cancer and HPV infection ( human papilloma virus).
Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study based on analysis of approximately 1500 records of sexually active women, revised in ASSBASALUD ESE and the LEAGUE AGAINST CANCER (Manizales, Colombia, South America), assessing the
socio-demographic characteristics of patients, gynecological and obstetric history and histological and colposcopy findings.
Results: The most outstanding results were an average age of first sexual intercourse of 17.9 years old, 19.3% who reported a history of sexually transmitted diseases, HPV was 73.3%, only 4.3% used barrier contraception. In 91.3% had no family history of gynecologic cancer, 42.1% of smears were reported as normal and 70.5% of negative colposcopy. There were 36.5% cases of LEIBG and 25.5% of HPV colposcopy reports. The incidence of cervical cancer was 2.3% for colposcopy, and found 8.8% of LEIAG.
No association between smoking, age of initiation of sexual activity and number ofsexual partners with cervical cancer.
Conclusion: HPV is sexually transmitted disease most common in this population and the main risk factor for developing cervical cancer. We found low levels of HPV infection in college women. Little use of barrier method which exposes the need to
promote barrier contraception as a protective factor. Low levels of contraceptive methods, reflected the high rates of births, with 86.5%. Colposcopy brings the number of diagnosis of infection by HPV, and others.
