Introduction: Most deaths by acute myocardial infarction occur during the first hour after the occurrence of the event and before receiving attention from a health team; therefore, it is considered that prehospital attention must respond to this situation. Due to this, the interest arises of investigating the status of the prehospital attention of acute myocardial infarction in Manizales city (Colombia).
Materials and methods: A descriptive-type study in which the utilized recollection method of data consisted in surveys and face-to-face interviews, evaluating as variables, the staff, the institution, and the facility of ambulances. The study population
consisted of the following entities of prehospital attention in Manizales – Colombia: Official Firefighter Brigade, ASSBASALUD ESE, BYR, GER, SER, and the Red Cross, although the last two entities did not participate in the study due to some inconveniences with their directors.
Results: This study provides important information for the development and improvement of new policies of prehospital attention, and proposes the need for the remodeling
of the resources on which they count on. Despite the satisfactory capacitance of the staff, the service-lending institutions do not count on the necessary medicalized ambulances for the adequate and timely attention of a coronary event. Conclusion:
In Manizales, we do not count on an inter-institutional and coordinated system for prehospital attention of acute myocardial infarction, nor with sufficient resources that give a timely attention, although there is the existence of a marked interest towards its implementation.
