Objective: To assess the medical records of patients enrolled in the hypertension program in the clinic ENEA ASSBASALUD ESE (Manizales, Colombia) between the years 2005-2007, with objective to verify the pharmacological and not-pharmacological use as well as the use of other medications that are not antihypertensive and the registry of the damage of the white organ in the studied population.
Materials and methods: The medical records of the hypertensive patients controlled in the hypertensive program in the clinic of Enea and the medical centre: IPC-Galán, Fátima, Aranjuez and Tablazo, from ASSBASALUD ESE, which are located in Manizales, Caldas, Colombia.
Results: According to the registered data a damage of the white organ was found in 34.12%. In 72.04% an adequate use of medications was found according to the guides to manage hypertension. The most frequently used therapeutic combination was of hydrochlorothiazide with captopril in 8.50% of the assessed medical records. A 34.60% of the registered patients are qualified as per-hypertensive and a 89.6% of the health workers which were interviewed said to know the guides to manage hypertension.
Conclusions: It is remarkable the quantity of patients with damage to the white organ, but it is not known if the damage already existed prior to the enrolment to the program. A 28% of the studied population is not receiving the adequate medication. It is considered as low the fact that only 89% of the health workers say to know the guides to manage hypertension. It is considered favourable that 60.7% presented a decline in the diastolic blood pressure and 56.9% in the systolic.
