Objetivo: O objetivo deste artigo é revisar a pesquisa sobre o papel dos minerais na Geologia Médica, destacando a importância e as inter-relações entre fatores geológicos e a saúde humana. Materiais e métodos: Estudo qualitativo sob a abordagem documental, a partir da qual foi realizada uma revisão de estudos anteriores sobre o tema de interesse, levando em conta que há um interesse crescente entre as comunidades de saúde e geociência em elucidar as origens geológico e fluxo de elementos tóxicos no ambiente que levam à exposição humana através do consumo de alimentos e água. Resultados: Durante o processo de revisão da literatura existente, evidenciou-se que o avanço da ciência e da tecnologia permitiu a abertura de novas linhas de pesquisa que requerem trabalho multidisciplinar com a participação de profissionais em diferentes áreas do conhecimento e geologia medical propõe a colaboração entre dois campos amplos de conhecimento que aparentemente não têm relação, como as ciências da terra e as ciências biomédicas. Vários aspectos são considerados, incluindo a interação entre meio ambiente e saúde, que é muito importante para um grande público, incluindo estudantes, pesquisadores, profissionais geológicos e biomédicos, formuladores de políticas e o público em geral. Conclusão: A geologia médica deve ser considerada como um componente do Plano Nacional de Ação em Saúde da Colômbia e, portanto, para ser mais eficaz, a comunidade de geociências da Colômbia deve ser incluída como um dos principais atores ou agências envolvidos nos estudos. de saúde ambiental.
