Background: Suicide is a multifunctional problem that leads to a public health situation; in Colombia as in other countries, suicide rates are increasing. The present research tries to identify population characteristics related to suicidal intention, among patients referred to San Juan de Dios Hospital in the period of time from July to November 2010. Materials and method: A descriptive study was performed in which demographic
data was included in relation to gender, age, socio-economical position, precedence and other variants such as alcohol dependence, psychoactive consumption, suicidal risk, family functionality, depression, anxiety, etc.. The previous was collected from 24 hospitalized patients referred to the clinic for depression, anxiety and suicide cases from July to November in the year 2010. Results: Female was the gender with the highest frequency (67%), age average was 28 years, socio-economical stratification with the highest proportion was the level 1 –
2 (54%), 62,5% of the population reported not to be alcohol dependent, 75% showed high suicidal risk, most used suicidal methods were connected to knife injuries (50%), poisoning (45,8%), 37% of them have low family malfunction and 33% of them have moderate depression.
