To identify the perception that families have about the functionality, participation
and environmental factors where their children in situation of intellectual disability
are performing in the city of Cali, Colombia. Materials and Methods: A descriptive
study of the perceptions that families of young people in situation of intellectual disability
have in relation to: functionality, participation and environmental factors. The
population was constituted by 15 families of young people that attend an educational
institution with artistic emphasis in the city of Cali. The used survey was designed following
the guidelines of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and
Health (ICF), which covers the issues established in the investigation and is free to use,
according to resolution WHA54.21. Results: The disability model that predominates
in the family core, is the medical-rehabilitator model, whose conception of subject is
set exclusively into the biological field, diversity is seen as a condition, as an anomaly
that has its roots from an imperfection which establish some subjects under standards
that are considered normal, focusing the responsibility of inclusion on the persons, by
hoping that they recover by themselves to fit within the environment. Conclusion: It
is necessary to make a major ideological shift in all contexts, especially the familiar
one that allows re-creating the construction of environment and of human being with
functional diversity, where dignity is respected as members of the human species.
