Objective: to describe the modifiable cardiovascular risk factors and the self-care capacity agency presented by some employees at a university in Manizales. Materials and methods: a quantitative, cross-sectional study with a non-probabilisitc sample of 51 university employees who presented two or more modifiable cardiovascular risk factors and participated in a physical fitness and conditioning program. The modifiable
cardiovascular risk factors were identified through a medical evaluation, an anthropometric measurement taking, and a lipid profile data. For the measurement of the capacity of self-care agency, a Colombian Self-care Capacity Value Scale was used.
Results: sedentariness (92%), abdominal obesity (90%), and dyslipidemias (57%) were the prevailing risk factors found in the present study. Regarding the self-care agency it was revealed that most of the individuals have a high sense of self-care. At
the multivariate analysis, an important faculty of high self care agency is observed in conjunction with the cardiovascular risk factors variables as sedentariness, abdominal obesity and type I obesity. Conclusion: although employees have uncontrolled factors cardiovascular risk, perceived to have a high capacity for self-care and ignorance of the presence and the way they could control their risk factors; This phenomenon invited to
contribute from the process nursing care interventions that ensure self-management of health in the company of other disciplines, in order to achieve a real change in lifestyle.
