Objective: To analyze the relationship between the perception of risk and risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DMT2) in Mexican university students.
Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study, the population of interest were undergraduate and graduate students from 18 to 40 years of age from Mexico. An online survey was used, through Google Forms. The FINDRISC questionnaire for the risk of T2DM and the Perception Questionnaire for developing T2DM were used. The data were analyzed and processed in the SPSS program.
Results:156 students answered the survey, mainly women. 32.7% have a slightly high risk and 29.5% moderate/high risk of developing T2DM. The perception of risk of developing T2DM obtained a mean of 18.6 (SD = 2.7) and was positively and significantly correlated with the risk of T2DM (r = .245, p = .002). Differences in risk and perception of risk of developing T2DM were found by sex, educational level and those who work.
Conclusions: Students who perceive higher risk report a high level of risk of developing T2DM. Men present greater internal control in the perception of risk, postgraduate students have a greater risk of DMT2 and more worry, students who also work have a greater risk and perception of risk of developing T2DM.
