The study of entrepreneurship has gained importance because its literature applies significant efforts to explain how and why new businesses are created. Within the different streams of study stand out the entrepreneurship as a result of a need of the entrepreneur, and those that originate from the innovation or opportunities of the market. The objective of this article is to identify if there are differences in personality traits between the opportunity entrepreneur and the necessity entrepreneur. To this end, it is proposed to analyze the different types of enterprises that exist in the northern region of the country in addition to the personal factors that influence them. The population studied is made up of inhabitants of two cities in northern Mexico, reaching a representative sample of 199 entrepreneurs. The results imply that the personality traits that stand out in an entrepreneur are openness, kindness, awareness and neuroticism. With only neuroticism being the distinguishing feature between a necessity entrepreneur and an opportunity entrepreneur, so opportunity entrepreneurs tend to have higher levels of neuroticism, while necessity entrepreneurs possess greater emotional stability.
