Objective: to determine the prevalence of hypertension in workers from Plaza Minorista and its distribution by sociodemographic and cardiovascular conditions, Medellin 2015. Methods: cross-sectional study on 399 individuals, general medical evaluation, socio-demographic survey, anthropometry, ASSIST (Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test) and IPAQ (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) were done. The overall prevalence of hypertension and other cardiovascular risks such as obesity, overweight, sedentary lifestyle and consumption of psychoactive was determined. The specific prevalence of hypertension was estimated according to demographic and cardiovascular risk variables. The confusion was quantified with logistic regression. Results: the prevalence of hypertension was 35.1%; overweight 40.1%, visceral obesity 59.9%, sedentary lifestyle 57.6%, smoking 22.8%, alcohol consumption 33.3% and family history of hypertension 36.8%, of diabetes 30.1% and dyslipidemia 23.8%. Hypertension presented association with age, sex, personal history of diabetes, visceral obesity, educational level and BMI. Conclusion: a high prevalence of hypertension was found, men and obese were the subgroups with higher occurrence; this is useful for guiding research and medical efforts in similar groups.
