This paper aims to describe the literature teaching approaches applied by teachers in the English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. On the other hand, it seeks to delve deeper into the challenges posed by the application of appropriate approaches to teaching literature in the English classroom. We propose a systema-tic review through thematic analysis of twenty-two scientific works published between 2003 and 2022 in specialized journals. To do this, specific sample inclusion and exclusion criteria are applied during the article search selection process. During sample selection, key words such as ESL teaching strategies, literature teaching approa-ches, challenges in teaching literature, ESL teaching and learning, and second language pedagogy were used with the aim of reaching significant samples and findings in around the available approaches and challenges that teachers face.
