This review examines The Invention of America (1958) by Edmundo O’Gorman, a seminal work for understanding the historical and conceptual construction of the American continent. O’Gorman argues that America was
not “discovered” but “invented” by European thought as the New World was integrated into its worldview. This perspective challenges the traditional notion of discovery and claims that the continent gained historical meaning
only after being conceptualized by Europe. The review discusses the theoretical implications of this thesis, the categories of universe, globe, and world within Christian cosmology, and the decisive role of Amerigo Vespucci in establishing America as the “fourth part” of the world.
