In the context of the aim for excellence, which has become every educational institution’s brand slogan, we look into effort and the part it plays in the process of human learning, since without it there can be no question of talent development. In view of the weakening of the culture of effort that we are witnessing in our modern-day societies, three contected issues are worth examining here: firstly, the meaning of effort as an experience of human limits and, as a consequence, its complex relationships with pleasure; secondly, the reasonable limits on the demand of it and, finally, its education in contexts that move our affections in opposite directions.
