This study investigates the alignment between digital transformation and competitive strategy, addressing a research gap concerning how digital transformation initiatives vary according to the strategic orientations organizations adopt. The theoretical framework is grounded in Miles and Snow’s typology of opposing competitive strategies: prospectors and defenders. The research was conducted with a purposive sample of large food-sector firms in the department of Caldas, Colombia, previously categorized according to these strategic profiles. Through semi-structured interviews with senior executives, the study analyzed how digital transformation is approached within both prospector and defender organizations. Findings reveal that in prospector firms, digital transformation is closely linked to the exploration of new technological innovations and responsiveness to dynamic market conditions. Conversely, defender firms emphasize digital initiatives aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. These results underscore that digital transformation is not a homogeneous process across firms but is strategically aligned with their competitive orientations. The article concludes with practical insights for aligning digital transformation with competitive strategy.
