LUZ MARÍA MARÍN ABOYTES

Cooperativism in Mexico has been a pillar for the social and economic development of marginalized communities, based on self-management, democratic participation, and equitable distribution of benefits. This qualitative study analyzes the motivations for belonging to production cooperatives and the perception of their impact on the lives of members and non-member employees. Through semi-structured interviews in two production cooperatives and an analysis using Atlas.ti, key patterns were identified along three axes: motivations, perceived impact, and organizational culture. Members are motivated by collective development, training in cooperative values, and shared decision-making, while non-member employees display a more individualistic view and, although they do not consider joining, consider it a workplace where they have experienced greater growth and support. The cooperative improves quality of life through employment and social cohesion, although it faces internal tensions and organizational challenges. The institutional history reinforces the sense of belonging and commitment. It is concluded that it is necessary to strengthen cooperative education, foster the sense of identity of non-member and member employees, and reduce individualism to ensure the sustainability of the model. The study highlights the interaction between individual and collective motivations, and the importance of strategic alliances in strengthening cooperativism.
