Scientific communication and scientific journalism, as transversal elements of the social appropriation of knowledge, are essential when it comes to transcoding science to non-specialized audiences. Since 2018, the University of Manizales has produced the magazine Eureka, ciencia para la gente and, in 2022, it launched its Unit for the Social Appropriation of Knowledge to promote investigative processes and make the knowledge developed more relevant. This explains the process, results and methodologies to deepen the participation of the public in the construction of science and communicative products on scientific processes. A methodology is proposed based on the concept of transcoding of technical knowledge that for Cecilia Mazzaro (2008, p. 10) seeks to move from cryptic languages to understandable languages and that for Quiñónez (2015) allows fragmenting scientific language and is part of that same process of doing science. This articles present´s the challenges of this type of academic exercise and the prevailing need to strengthen them and give a preponderant place to the co-construction between academics (scientists) and the communities that are the object of their studies as active agents and not passive or recipients are presented
